Promiscuous
Promiscuous has a number of definitions, especially if it is used in different contexts. There are at least four definitions of this word. The first definition of promiscuous, and is usually the one appearing in English dictionaries, is “composing of all sorts of persons or thingsâ€. With that definition, the word promiscuous can be used to describe individuals or objects that are brought or compiled together at random.
To be promiscuous is very close to being indiscriminate. If a person tags you as promiscuous, then what they could mean is that you don’t really practice taste in most of your personal choices. Your individual preference of material things is at random. And with people, you tend to mingle or associate yourself with anybody you meet.
And its chiefly because of this definition that promiscuity is now commonly applied to sexual relations. A person who is said to be promiscuous in terms of sexual context means that he or she has several partners and that he or she sees them all and be with them on a casual basis, one or more at a time.
Sexually promiscuous people are those who don’t necessarily limit their sexual life to only what is accepted by the society. In our world today, being monogamous is norm as far as sexual relationships are concerned. And it seems to stay that way despite of the number of technological advancement experienced by today’s society. To be sexually promiscuous is to break away from that subconscious rule.
Having two lovers at the same time can also be considered as promiscuity. But then again, in some cultures, doing this is actually not an issue. Married women who regularly have sexual relations with men other than their husbands are definitely promiscuous. With men though, having a similar relationship such as that is considered to be extramarital relations only, and not necessarily promiscuity. Much of that is because men are now being assumed to be polygamous in nature. Gradually, that concept of men is being accepted. For women though, it is still not customary for them to have many partners just yet.
Women who have several sexual associates at a time, regardless if they are married or not, are outwardly tagged promiscuous with no contest at all. Being promiscuous is bias to women and that’s very true. But much of that is due to the cultural aspect integrated in the word’s own definition.
