Hydrocodone Information

March 21st, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Drugs Information

Hydrocodone is a drug that is very related to codeine, which belongs to the narcotic analgesic group. The main purpose of this drug is to relieve pain. It is usually available in syrup, tablet, or capsule form. This drug is relatively safe and can be taken with or without food in the stomach. But it should be taken with discretion at all times. Once the drug interacts with monoamine oxidase inhibitors in the body, it may cause drowsiness. And it has many harmful side effects if abused.

The consumer requirement for this drug had dramatically increased over the year, in the same way that its illicit use is slowly, but discreetly getting rampant. Hydrocodone is somehow habit forming, so patients need to exercise extra care when taking it. Research had shown abusive patients exhibit being psychologically or physically dependent on the drug. It is very mandatory that patients take the drug only under a qualified physician’s supervision – and always according to the dosage they prescribe.

And just like other addictive drugs, hydrocodone has withdrawal effects once its administration to the body is stopped all too suddenly. After several weeks of use, doctors would have to implement a gradual decrease in dosage on a patient before he stops prescribing it. Else, harmful effects would definitely show.

When taking hydrocodone, it is also important that consuming alcohol should be avoided. Drinking wine while taking hydrocodone will increase the risk of dizziness and drowsiness in the patient. The combination of these two substances can also damage the liver.

And so before combining hydrocodone with other drugs, better consult with your doctor first. Drugs that induce drowsiness such as antihistamines, antidepressants, muscle relaxants, and other pain relievers may only cause heightened side effects to the patient instead of treating them. Harmful side effects include dangerous sedation.

Aside from drowsiness, it is also possible that hydrocodone may cause constipation. Patients taking this drug have to drink plenty of water, preferably more than eight glasses a day. Doing so would lessen this particular side effect of the drug. Eating food rich in fiber would also help a lot.

Before taking the drug, it is best to inform your doctor of all your present and previous health conditions. If you have a history of drug or alcohol abuse, head injury, and urinary retention, tell your doctor about it. In the same way that you should inform them of any diseases that you have, which affects the liver, kidney, or the gallbladder. Those with asthma, hypothyroidism, Addison’s disease, and epilepsy have to be very careful when taking this medicine.
