Tramadol Information

February 20th, 2007 | 7 Comments | Posted in Drugs Information

Tramadol is a type of drug that belongs to opiate or narcotic analgesics. It is mainly used to alleviate moderately severe pains. It is usually given to patients who have undergone surgery or those who are suffering from pains caused by diseases like cancer. Tramadol is also widely used to relieve chronic joint pains. Tramadol works by lessening the body’s sensation of pain.

Tramadol is sold only in tablet form and has to be taken orally. It may be administered prior to consumption of food. But to reduce instances of an upset stomach, it is best to take it after meals. People who are taking tramadol should follow their doctor’s instructions very carefully. This drug is habit forming. That means that who fail to use it properly are the ones who are at higher risks of being addicted to it and take it unnecessarily.

To counter a patient’s addictive reaction, doctors would advise them to administer the drug in small doses, usually four tablets or less per day every three days. Then they would increase that dosage until it reaches desired proportions. Never take more tablets per day or extend the instructed time frame of taking it. Doing so may affect your mood or behavior greatly.

Taking it cannot be stopped abruptly as well, for the same reasons as stated. To take the patient out of Tramadol medication, doctors would gradually decrease its dosage, in the same as they first introduced the drug in the body.

Tramadol is a drug known to induce withdrawal consequences, side effects, and overdose symptoms. And these are the reason why proper care has to be practiced when taking the medicine. It may also cause allergic reactions and harmful effects when used with other drugs. It is then a must that doctors know of the patient’s medical history.

Tramadol may initiate episodes of dizziness, headache, and drowsiness. It may also bring about nervousness, anxiety, and agitation. Instances that the person develops an upset stomach, diarrhea, constipation and vomits because of the drug are but common too. For severe symptoms like difficulty in breathing, seizures, and hallucinations, patients are strictly advised to check with their doctor right away.

Tramadol is a rather powerful medicine. It is important that it should be kept in a tight container and away from children’s reach. It is not supposed to be taken without prescription and so do not recommend it to other patients suffering the same disease without their own doctor’s approval.

My 89 year old grandfather was prescribed Tramadol because of pain in both knees. He should have had a double knee replacement 6 years ago and now at 89 he has a lot of difficulty and pain. So, in the doctor’s infinite wisdom he prescribed this NARCOTIC to an man who has a weak heart (with a pacemaker), is fairly immobile and can only walk short distances. Within a few days of taking Tramadol he grew immeasurably paranoid and confused. Clenching his jaw and grinding his teeth. He mixed up words and everyones names. Oddly, he became cold all the time. His temperature dropped to 97 degrees confirming hypothermia brought on by the narcotic which lowers heart rate and overall energy level. Beware of this drug. It is in the same family as Morphine and can not be taken on a daily basis over time like aspirin or ibuprophin. Our experience is serious with respect to my grandfather because though off the drug for a week and a half he has lingering confusion which appears to be the beginning of senile dementia triggered by Tramadol a powerful narcotic. His temperature is still low at 97 degrees. Beware.

My 1 and a half year old dog obtained a broken bone in her leg. She was prescribed Tramadol and it helped my animail tremendously. To the people saying beware of this drug, i want to add that i firmly disagree with your opinion. I think you were possibly uneducated with the medication after it was prescribed. Always look up any new medications given by a physician so you can be knowlegable and not just relie on one other person’s suggestions. For example the Doctor, never put a physician on a peddastole you will get let down.
