Alternative science is one of those things that just grow out of exactness. An offshoot of something as exact as science itself. Renowned physicist once remarked that " Science fiction is useful both for stimulating the imagination and for diffusing fear of the future". Alternative Science or Pseudoscience as some people refer to it is often defined as "claims presented so that they appear to be scientific even though they lack supporting evidence and plausibility to be an exact science".
However, in contrast, Science is defined as "a set of methods designed to describe and interpret observed and inferred phenomena, past or present, and aimed at building a testable body of knowledge open to rejection or confirmation". While science would retain its sanctity of being true and being in tandem with facts, belief in alternative science is wide spread too. According a Gallup poll release, about 25 % of people world-wide believe in astrology and the effect planetary positions and stars have on their lives. Over 50% believe in Extra Sensory Perception ( ESP) and about 60 % do believe that some people do posses phychic powers. Some people swear that they had seen UFOs and some believe that they do exist. We can't miss the number of people who think that ghosts and spirits exist, can we?
More women seem to believe in pseudosciences than men do and children in particular are greatly mesmerized at the thought of science fiction, pseudosciences or alternative sciences, though they don't know what these terms mean. Alternative science, though not grounded in facts and is not an exact science, it is certainly glamorous and gives an edge of uncertainty to people who believe in it. People are drawn towards it because it takes them into the realm on unknown, a world of fantasy. Alternative science is surrealistic. Almost dreamlike and hence it draws in people to form their own perceptions of reality which really gives them a raw sense of power because they get to create something out of nothing. A form of feeling puissant.
There are concerns, however, that belief in alternative sciences like these- if they can be referred to as a science at all, might be harmfull for one's Psyche. However, media might have had a role to play in blowing things out of proportion and the movies being doled out on the double on alien sightings, alien abductions, UFOs, ESP and other forms of alternative science or pseudosciences. Movies like the ET, The Independence Day, My Favourite Martian and tele serials like Heroes only reconfirm the widespread popularity of this science as a major source of inspiration for thrillers - books, movies, tele serials and stories.
Scientists are certainly concerned about the widespread public gullibility but choose not to talk about it and just let it be. They believe that true science lovers would eventually know what to believe in and what not to while everyone else can go about thinking the way they want to.
Alternative science is surely the glamour side of true science but nothing can be said about the veracity of the science itself. It is however a major puller when it comes to inspiring people to love science or even show some kind of interest towards it and that is certainly a point scientists would love to dabble with.
