Motocross is the term used to describe the motorcycle races. It is a popular event worldwide. It started in the year 1924.

Motorcycles developed from bicycles when engines were fitted to them. The motorcycle races in the beginning tested the endurance of the rider and the motorcycle. Motocross was very popular in Britain. Later, this sport gained popularity in the USA as well. The motorcycles used in the motocross have changed over the years. The engines used in the races include low-powered 50 cc engines to roaring high-powered 500 cc engines. With the improvement in technology, the bike manufacturers are able to product faster and more efficient bikes. This is making motocross more and more exciting. With the improvement of the motorcycles, the overall standard of the races have gone up. Motocross is a spectator event. The spectators appreciate the dare devilry displayed by the participants. In the past, motocross races used two engine variants—four stroke and two stroke. Two stroke engines were popular because of their superior performance. But the two stroke engines were not environment friendly.

Motocross riders race in different categories depending on the engine capacity of the motorcycle. The motocross categories include 450 cc, 250 cc, 150 cc, 110 cc, and 50 cc. Motorcycles are specially designed to suit the tough terrains on which the races are held. Motocross champions are sponsored by the leading motorcycle manufacturers of the world including Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki etc. Japanese manufacturers produce the maximum number of motorcycles used in the races.

Motocross races are physically and mentally demanding and tests the endurance of both the rider and the machine. The rider has to be in optimum physical and mental condition. Motocross can be taxing on the rider. The rider has to cope with extreme riding conditions. Physical and mental agility is one more essential trait of a successful Motocross participant. Balancing is a skill learnt by years of practice and a fit body. The surfaces used in the Motocross races are very demanding and sometimes can test the best of the riders. This separates the champions from the mediocre riders. The stunts performed by the Motocross riders are spectacular to watch but very difficult to execute. It comes with years of dedicated practice. Sometimes these stunts are quite dangerous and can seriously injure the riders. Motocross events are held annually in many countries around the world. The majority of the races are held in the USA and some European countries. Motocross is an expensive sport and some countries from Asia and Africa cannot afford to participate in them. With the use of modern technology the bikes in the Motocross circuit have become faster and more efficient thereby making the events more and more exciting for the spectators.
