Jujutsu is an ideal self defense mechanism for everyone irrespective of gender, age, and nationality. Popular disciplines like Judo and Aikido is derived from Jujutsu. A Jujutsu practitioner has to learn to use many techniques like throws, joint-locks, punches, kicks etc effectively. These techniques are essential for self defense. Jujutsu is also an effective form of exercise. It helps in maintaining overall physical and mental fitness. Concentration and coordination is improved with the practice of Jujutsu. Like many other Oriental martial arts, Jujutsu too has its moral teachings like respecting elders, maintaining discipline etc.
Jujutsu has many forms in the world with subtle differences. Strangling and throwing techniques are the most frequently used techniques of Jujutsu. Striking techniques too are seen in some of the Jujutsu styles as well. The modern versions of Jujutsu are not popular as its derivative Judo, which today is an Olympic Sport. Still, many Jujutsu schools are running throughout the world. Bruce Lee, the most famous martial artist ever studied the Jujutsu techniques in depth and incorporated many techniques into his revolutionary Jeet Kune Do. Jujutsu has techniques which are ideal for close range combats. Grappling, Strangling, and throwing technique are useful in hand to hand combat. The philosophy of Jujutsu is to use the opponent’s force to foil their moves. Counter attacks are swift and menacing. The Zen philosophy is used in Jujutsu to improve the minds of the practitioners. Jujutsu has a wide range of self defense techniques which are effective in actual combat. Jujutsu training is quite demanding to the body and the mind. It requires a high level of physical fitness to perform the techniques. Throwing techniques demand proper balance of the body as well as tremendous strength. Jujutsu techniques can be effectively used in real life situations. Various meditation techniques are also taught in Jujutsu training. Ground techniques are also important for Jujutsu exponents. In fact, grappling is a part of the ground techniques. Jujutsu gives more emphasis on the ground techniques rather than the strikes. That is why it is distinctly different from other martial arts like Karate. Jujutsu techniques can help subjugate the enemy by using the ground techniques. Many of the grappling and throwing techniques have been incorporated into other Japanese martial art disciplines like Judo and Aikido.
Jujutsu will never lose its importance as a martial arts discipline as it is based on sound techniques which have proved its worth throughout the Japanese history.
