Wing Chun is a Chinese martial art. It is an excellent martial art discipline for close range fighting. Ng Mui, a Chinese monk, is considered to be the founder of Wing Chun. Grand master Yip Man was the most famous exponent of Wing Chun.
Wing Chun is a form of Chinese Kung Fu. Ng Mui was a nun at a temple and she was a practitioner of Kung Fu. She developed three forms of techniques which later came to be known as Wing Chun. There is no written record of the history of Wing Chun. Yip Man learnt the techniques of Wing Chun from Ng Mui and he was the first person to teach it outside mainland China. Wing Chun is an aggressive style of self defense system.
Wing Chun emphasizes the use of short movements to parry attacks. It uses only three styles as opposed to ten styles used by traditional Shaolin temple Kung Fu. Wing Chun was developed purely as a self defense system. The movements were specially designed to eliminate wasted energies. Wing Chun exponents do not use fancy high kicks. About 40% of the techniques consist of short, effective and low kicks. Hand movements are predominantly used in this martial art. Blocks are effectively used to parry blows and counter attack.
Bruce Lee was the most famous practitioner of Wing Chun Kung Fu. He trained under Grand master Yip Man in Hong Kong. Wing Chun had a lot of influence on the development of Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do. Many Jeet Kune Do techniques have been taken from Wing Chun. Bruce was drawn towards this martial art because of its usefulness in close range fights. He immortalized the Wing Chun techniques by depicting them in action in his hugely popular martial art movies. The world came to know about the benefits of Wing Chun.
Like all other Oriental martial arts, Wing Chun too stresses the need to develop physical, mental, as well as spiritual character. Coordination of mind, body, and soul is what a practitioner should aim for while learning Wing Chun. Supreme physical fitness enables the practitioners to use the techniques effectively. A calm and unpolluted mind too helps to execute the techniques effectively. Meditation techniques are used to control the mind. Rigorous training is required to perfect the fighting techniques so that they can be optimally used against opponents. Wing Chun carries an ancient Chinese tradition which emphasizes the need to create ideal citizens. Practicing martial arts is a good way to increase concentration and gain self confidence. It also helps to instill moral values. According to the Chinese tradition, martial art is not only a discipline; it is a way of life.
