Squash is an indoor game which originated in London, England. It is one of the most popular racket sports in the world. It originated from the ancient game of real tennis. Gradually, the popularity of the game spread in Europe and other countries of the world. Since the beginning Squash has been regarded as a sport of the middle and the upper classes. There is no convincing history about how the game of Squash originated.

In its initial years, there was no standard size of the Squash courts. The game was played with a ball made of soft rubber ball with holes. Probably, the name “Squash” was given because of the “squashy” nature of the ball used. Presently, the game is played in more than 120 countries across the world. More than 15 million Squash players play this game in many countries across the continents. Squash is an indoor game popular among both men and women. The game is played by two players which is the singles version, and by four players which is the doubles version.

The doubles court is slightly bigger in size than the singles court. The squash court is covered on all sides by transparent walls. The spectators can watch the game from all the sides. The game of Squash is becoming popular throughout the world. The Squash played in some countries are slightly different from the Squash played in other countries worldwide. World Squash Federation (WSF) is the governing body of the game of Squash. WSF is responsible for popularizing this sport worldwide. The Federation is trying hard to include Squash in the Olympics.

Squash gained the maximum popularity during the 1980’s. The rackets used in Squash are manufactured from composite material such as graphite, titanium, and Kevlar with strings made from artificial materials. Squash balls are made from rubber. Balls are manufactured by global giants such as Wilson, Prince, and Dunlop. Squash is a fast game which requires a lot of stamina. Fitness is a very important  quality for a Squash player. Athleticism is of paramount importance for a Squash player.

The game of Squash requires superior combination of speed, flexibility, good reflexes, and power. Squash players are also known for their exceptional cardiovascular and muscular endurance. Squash players are generally exceptionally athletic. British Open is the most prestigious squash tournament in the world. It was started in the year 1930. The women’s tournament was started in the year 1921.The most famous female Squash player was Heather Mckay. She had the distinction of remaining unbeaten throughout her 18 year career. Jahangir Khan and Janhsher Khan are the two of the greatest male squash players the world has ever seen. Among the racket sports, Squash has the longest rallies.
