The game of Table Tennis originated in England. It is a popular sport played in many countries of the world. It is prevalent in many East Asian countries including Japan, China, Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. It is also an Olympic discipline.

Table Tennis is often regarded as a miniature or the indoor version of Lawn Tennis. The concept of this game is similar to Lawn Tennis. But the rules are slightly different. This game is played by both 2 and 4 players. Table tennis is played with rackets and a small hollow plastic ball. The rackets are made from wood with thick rubber coverings. The rubber surface may have inward or outward pimples. The rubber surface of the racket enables the players to spin the ball effectively so that the opponent finds it difficult to return the ball. Spin is a very popular technique among the modern players. The game is played on a table which is called the court. The court is divided into two parts by a net. The object of the game is to hit the ball into the opponent’s half of the court and earn points. Table tennis techniques which are used frequently include offensive strokes such as loop drive, speed drive, flip, counter drive, and smash. Table Tennis players also use defensive techniques like chop, slice, block, lob, and drop shot.

Table Tennis made its debut as an Olympic sport in 1988 Seoul Olympics. There are four Olympic God medals to be won. These include Men’s singles and doubles, and women’s singles & doubles. China has been dominating this sport for many decades now. A few European countries like Romania, Sweden, England, Austria, The Czech Republic, Hungary, and Denmark are giving stiff competition to the Chinese players over the years. Teams like Korea, Singapore, and Hong Kong are challenging China’s dominance. International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) is the governing body of the world Table Tennis.

Table Tennis champions display tremendous skills in executing body control and footwork. Reaction times shown by the players too are exemplary. Table Tennis requires a high level of hand, eye, and body coordination. Footwork plays an important part in a Table Tennis match. The Chinese are traditionally considered to be having deft footwork. This explains why China has been the dominant Table Tennis force for such a long time. It is a swift game with long rallies. It is an entertaining game and a good way to maintain physical fitness. It requires many years of regular practice to master the techniques. Tournaments are highly competitive in nature. Grand Slam is the term used for a person who all the major and prestigious championships including the World Championship Title, Olympic Games gold medal, and the World Cup gold medal.
