Hindustan Ambassador Review

The Hindustan Ambassador, or "Amby" as it is affectionately known in India, has carved an enviable niche for itself with the country's car buyers. Its sheer ubiquity in India's cities and towns, and its widespread use as an all-purpose vehicle (ranging from taxi to family car) meant it was prevalent across the entire subcontinent. Limited competition from rival manufacturers meant that the Ambassador's success was unchallenged.

The Ambassador was first car to be manufactured in India, has been ruling the Indian roads ever since its inception in 1948. Originally it was based on Morris Oxford (United Kingdom, 1948), the Ambassador has been undergoing a series of changes, adapting to customer expectations.

With upgraded manufacturing facilities available in Uttarpara, West Bengal, Hindustan Motors Limited is geared for production of a more contemporary version of the Ambassador, with features catering to the needs of the present generation.

The Ambassador, which the only automobile to be Indian roads for more than five decades now, has carved a special niche for itself in the passenger car segment. Its dependability, spaciousness and comfort factor makes it the most preferred car for many generations of Indians. The Ambassador's time-tested, tough, accommodating and practical characteristics make it a truly care made to handle the Indian roads.

This energetic export drive improved Hindustan's financial situation, but Hindustan wanted more. In 1991, the first Hindustan’s returned to their roots when exports back to the UK began. The Ambassador was made to appeal to nostalgic people and expatriate Indians who longed to drive their own piece of India. Despite optimistic sales forecasts, the reality was somewhat different. At an average of just 6 Hindustan Ambassador GLXs per year were sold throughout the early-to-mid 1990s. The cars had a basic specification and the list price was low at £7,150, but its market was simply too tiny for exports to the UK to make any kind of financial sense.

The 1.8-litre, 74bhp Isuzu engine was reasonably sprightly and could propel the old car to a 90mph top speed. In terms of dimensions, it was an identical length to the 5-door Honda Civic – more compact than first appearance would have you believe.

The new Ambassador however has the MPFI engine with 16 bit ECU in New Retro and 1800 ISZ which offers easy cold start and gives enhanced performance. It includes improved suspension and features smoother gears and ergonomically designed plush seats with wider tyres offering a comfortable driving experience. Also included is Power steering and with Spacious interiors, ample boot space providing excellent driving comfort. It is also equipped with Front Disc brakes for effective braking and is absolutely appropriate for Indian roads.

  5. Dear Sir/Madam,
In regard to the all new Ambassador with green technology retro styling is the new rage in Australia.
I beleive within the Indian community in Australia their would be a following in this country.(could be done by survey.)
Even Australian born people who remember these cars and and the fact they are strong and easy to fix many arty people would I think admire this car as high speed V8′s and 6 cylinder cars are not very popular at this stage.
Also noting either by a survey to see the export of your Cars could be done.(Export to Australia. 500 /1500)
If you thought it would be profitable you could think of may be bringing in as a Special Import.??.
Many roads in outback Australia can only accomdate a rear drive vehicle as in AUS only cylinder and V8 cars are made rear drive.
Over a ten year period this car the Ambassador is much cheaper to run eg(100,000Km service for a Subaru in AUS is $1800.00 AUD)

  6. Dear Sir/Madam,
In regard to your new green Ambassador.
I beleive within the Indian Community you would have a following in Australia and with arty people also.
At this stage Retro is in vogue at the moment and some Australian people can spend over 50K in restoring an older car that might have only been purchased for $500.00. before restore.
Australia is very vast and in remote area’s only a car that is easy to fix simple to understand mechanically and rear drive.
Do a survey in Arty areas own community in AUS.
Bring in as special Import 500/1500.??
V8 and 6 cylinder cars are only made in rear drive in AUS.
Over ten year period 100,00KM service for a Subaru costs over $1850.00 AUS.
The Ambassador is one of the last rear drive 4 cylinders made today. (Current price’s of older English car are high in AUS).
Even a tourist or function centres would take to this car,it is strong, reliable and Retro now more modern.
    Regards

  7. I would love to own one of these. I am in the UK, and there is actually a business in south wales who are importing brand new ones. however…making them suitable for compliance with European regs seems to have driven the price up to around 10-11000 GBP which for what you get is unlikely to appeal to many. You could get a decent mid-spec fiesta/low end focus for the same money. Its a pity they couldnt chop them out for 6-7k, they’d sell by the bucket load

  8. I wish they were on sale in Germany where I live. I would buy one tomorrow!
