Virender Sehwag

March 4, 2007

Virender Sehwag or “Veeru” as he is popularly known is the player of the masses. His name is enough to draw the people from all over India and the rest of the world to the Tv sets. An exceptionally talented player, with superb hand-eye co-ordination and the gift of timing, he truly represents the new brand of players. One of the few players who can take away the game from the opposition in a span of few overs, Sehwag is not the player one looks at for technique but for pure entertainment. Unofficially one of the most entertaining players to watch in world cricket today, Sehwag can take any attack to the cleaners on his day. Shear talent and a cool head with good temperament make Sehwag the player he is. Unfazed by any opposition or situation, Sehwag is a free flowing batsman who plays his own game in his own way. Though his technique and lack of footwork has come under severe criticism Sehwag has continued to score runs perplexing both his critics and admirers. Sehwag lets his bat do the talking most of the time, scoring a hundred every four test matches. The record is exemplary by any standard, especially considering that he had to wait a long time before making it to the test side. He also holds the record for the highest test score by an Indian. His score of 309 came against Pakistan in Multan .

Sehwag’s playing style has often been compared to Sachin Tendulkar because of a number of similar shots, build and appearance. He has acknowledged numerous times that he consciously attempted to model his playing style on Tendulkar’s in his youth. He is often noted for his extremely aggressive style of batting, and in 2005 he was described by Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack as the “most exciting opener in the world”. Sehwag along with being a great crowd puller and entertainer is also a great asset to the team with his off-spinners which usually help in getting a break-through. He also is a good slip fielder and a great catcher. What makes him special though is the character he is on the field.

Sehwag hitting a six to get to his 300 against Pakistan best describes him. His taking out his tongue to Shoiab Akhtar during a match make him the entertainer he is. Though he has his short-comings especially with his technique and shot selection at times, it is his positive attitude that compensates it for him.

Few players have the ability like Sehwag to play one ball at a time, forgetting about the last ball the moment it’s over. It may have been hit for a six or just gone past the edge, there is no memory of it as far as Sehwag is concerned. It is this rawness anout him that makes him this special player, the opposition is afraid of. Recently there has been a dip in his One day form, though he has flourished in the longer version of the game. Still there are very few who question his inclusion in the Indian side for the world cup. His presence at the crease, his positive presence in the dressing room, and his wily off-spinners in the field will be handy for the Indian on the West-Indian pitches. This former vice-captain can be a great asset to the team if he regains his form and single handedly win matches for India at the 2007 world cup.
