Barbra Streisand Biography
Barbra Streisand is an American actress and singer, who has won numerous Emmy Awards, Grammy Awards, and Golden Globe Awards. Over the 47 years of her career in the entertainment industry she has been popular due to her star power and her huge popularity.
Born to Jewish American parent, Barbra began her debut with the entertainment world, when she took to singing at nightclubs as a teenager. It was in 1961, she got her first break by signing a contract with Winnipeg, Manitoba's ‘Town and Country’ Restaurant and her performance here was much recognized. Her role in the musical ‘I Can Get It for You Wholesale’, turned her into a star. It was also in this year that she signed her first contract with Columbia Records.
Her first album, ‘The Barbra Streisand’ Album was a huge success and she won two Grammy Awards for this album. At one point, three of her albums were at the Top Ten on Billboard's pop albums, something very unusual particularly since the Beatles dominated the music scene during those times. She went on to do 60 albums with Columbia Records and each album had her own unique interpretation.
Her first film Funny Girl (1968) and it was hugely popular. It earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress. Notable films were ‘On a Clear Day You Can See Forever’, ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’, ‘What's Up, Doc?’, ‘The Way We Were’, ‘A Star Is Born’ and ‘All Night Long’. When ‘All Night Long’ became a disappointment, Barbra Streisand took to doing lesser and lesser films. Her most recent film was the comedy ‘Meet the Fockers’.
She has won Two Oscars, Four Emmys, Nine Golden Globes and Eight Grammys. She is also a liberal political activist and was an active supporter of the Democratic Party.
