Bette Davis Biography
Bette Davis or Ruth Elizabeth Davis is one of the most famous and talented actresses to ever grace the silver screen in America. She played a variety of roles, ranging from romantic, and historical, to comedy and melodrama. She was hugely successful in her romantic movies. Such were the incomparable contributions that she made to American cinema, that she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Film Institute. She is also the only woman to receive such an award.
Beginning her career with a Broadway play, she moved to Hollywood to enhance her career. Initially she did films with Universal Studios, but these were not so successful. It was when she moved into a contract with joined Warner Bros in 1932 that her career really took off.
Movies that she did at this period and during the 1940’s were the ones that established her reputation as a great actress and made her very popular. The roles that she took were that of manipulators, killers or unsympathetic personalities, which shows her fortitude to play realistic roles than dreamy characters which many actresses of that time were more interested in taking up. She was keen to show talent rather than just be a popular pretty face.
On the personal front Bette Davis, was married four times and divorced thrice. She also admitted that success at the professional front came with sacrifice in her personal life. She raised her children on her own and her final years were marred by ill health. She died as a result of breast cancer, leaving her fans memorable roles in more then 100 films, and roles in television and theatre. She ranked number 2 in the American Film Institute "AFI's 100 Years... 100 Stars" list, put out in 1999.
