Mariah Carey

Mariah was born on March 27, 1970 in Huntington, New York. Mariah is the youngest child of Patricia Hickey a former opera singer and vocal coach. Mariah had a hard time growing up due to her family being bi-racial. She grew up with racial slurs and even violence causing the family to relocate through New York. Mariah’s parents divorced when she was 3 years old. Mariah soon began singing and by the time she was in Junior High School when she began writing her own songs.

Mariah was nicknamed the Mirage in High School because she was hardly there but she did graduate from Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, New York. Mariah moved to New York City where she began as a backup singer for Brenda K Starr. In 1988, Mariah met Tommy Mottola a Columbia Records Executive whom she later married and divorced. Mariah’s debut album called Mariah Carey was released in 1990did very well and put Mariah on the map. Her second album Emotions was homage to Motown Soul it was successful but not as good as her debut album.

In 1992, Mariah was on the MTV show called Unplugged. It was here that Mariah got to showcase her vocal talent. Many skeptics believed that Mariah’s sound was due to studio techniques but on Unplugged she proved them wrong. Her show got some of the best rating ever that her record company released a recording of her performance on that show.

Mariah’s record career was steady she was as popular as ever. In 2001, after non stop working, Mariah had appeared different in the way she carried herself. She had a very strange experience on Total Request Live on MTV, she had given out popsicles to the audience members and then what was deemed a strip tease to reveal Daisy Duke Shorts and a halter top. It was reported that Mariah was having an emotional and physical breakdown. Meanwhile her movie career was not doing much better Glitter was released to horrible ratings and soon Mariah had checked herself into a hospital for some much needed rest and recuperation from exhaustion.
The much awaited record, The Emancipation of Mimi was released in 2005 to a great review. She won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album. Mariah has enjoyed a great career and since her comeback she has had nothing but success.
