Christopher Dodd, hailing from Willimantic, Connecticut, is the senior senator of his home state. The American politician, who is also a lawyer, had been a U.S. Representative from his state (1975-1981). In 1981, he was made a U.S. Senator. He was even associated with the Democratic National Committee where he held the position of general chairman (1995-1997). Alongside serving as the senior senator, he also heads the Senate Banking Committee as Chairman. He will be running for the post of President of the United States in the elections of 2008. The sixty-three year old Dodd was a volunteer for Peace Corps till 1968 in Dominican Republic.

Dodd also served in the U.S. Army Reserve for a few years. 1980 was the year when Christopher Dodd was first elected as senator and thereafter he was reelected in five consecutive elections, a first in the history of his home state. Originally, Dodd had considered running for the 2004 Presidential Elections but then decided against it. Dodd has already declared that he will not be running for the post of Senator in 2010. Dodd’s candidacy for the Presidential Elections was on a television show on the 11th of January this year. A week later, in Hartford, his candidacy was formally announced in the presence of his supporters at the Old State House. It has been reported by the website opensecrets.org that the industry of financial services is funding Dodd’s campaign for the elections heavily.

Dodd’s prospects in the elections however have not looked very bright as he had been lagging behind in state polls as well as national polls in May and moreover a Gallup poll determined him to be the weakest contender among the Democrats. Dodd has stated that he believes that more people will back him once they come to know of his views opposing the war in Iraq. He has promised that if elected, he will end the war and withdraw all troops from Iraq within one year. He has also voiced criticism on the subject of warrant less surveillance in Iraq. Dodd is married to Jackie Marie Clegg and they have two daughters, Christina and Grace.
