AdvertisementWillard Mitt Romney is politician from Michigan and later from Massachusetts. He was born in 1947 on the 12th of March. He was the 70th Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Presently Romney is running for the nomination in the 2008 United States presidential election. A former CEO of Bain & Company, which is a management consulting firm; he is also the co-founder of Bain Capital, a private equity investment firm. After working as the CEO of the Winter Olympics 2002, Romney was elected in 2002 as Massachusetts Governor. Romney served only one single term and did not seek re-election in 2006. His term expired in 2007, on January 4.
Since 2004 at the Republican National Convention, Romney was thought to be a potential 2008 presidential candidate. On January 3, 2007, he stepped down as governor of Massachusetts; Romney formed a presidential exploratory committee with the Federal Election Commission. In 2007, on February 13, Romney officially announced his candidacy for the nomination for presidency in 2008.
Romney won the Ames Straw Poll with 31% of the vote in August 2007. At the Straw Poll his closest combatant, Mike Huckabee, received 18% of the total vote. John McCain, Rudy Giuliani, unofficial candidate Fred Thompson, were not present. Romney also won the Straw Poll, Illinois with 40.35% of the vote. Fred Thompson came in 2nd with 19.96% of the total vote.
Romney has been the object of criticism for comparing his sons’ campaign service to service in the military. Quoting Romney, “one of the ways my sons are showing support for our nation is helping to get me elected.” None of his five sons, nor Romney have served in the military. Romney later apologized while he said, he misspoke and that there is no comparison to the sacrifice that military people make.
One of his major Republican rivals, former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani, compared him to John Kerry, the Democrat, answering to a Romney comment about the involvement of lawyers in national security decisions. Romney’s words on gay rights have been observed by some to be wavering. Like Kerry, Mitt Romney has put in finances for much of his campaign with his own personal fortune. It is said he has contributed over $17 million to the campaign.
