Best Format for a Resume Reference
A reference page is an important writing aspect of your resume. A reference page will be more effective than listing references in your resume. The present job market wants a separate reference page and not a list of references.
Now we will examine as to how to write a reference page. Normally it is a better idea to list 3 professional references and three personal references. Some jobs may have lesser requirements of references.
In your professional references you will have to include the referees name, occupation titles, your referenced company name and address, phone number and email address of the ex-company.
Personal references are a bit less significant. But still it is a good idea to list a few personal referees. This will help your hiring employer to know about you. Personal references are always advisable to include the business addresses of your reference.
Last but not the least important is that you will have to first contact referees and inform them that they will be getting enquiries from your potential employer. This will give them time to think and you can also know the kind of reference they would be giving to your hiring manager.
Your Professional Reference should contain the following:
Name
Job Title
Company
Address
Phone Number
Email Address
Personal References:
Name
Address
Phone Number
Email Address
A resume reference is a person who can assert your bona fides and all or part of the data you have stated in your resume. A reference is usually contacted in the last stage of the job selection procedure.
Resume References normally will have to be able to answer questions based on the following subjects:
Professional Conduct / Personal Character
Academic Qualifications
Work Experience
Job titles
Responsibilities
Employment Dates
Communication Skills
Oral
Written
Strengths & Weaknesses
Management / Leadership Skills
Attitude
Attendance
Punctuality
Dependability
Reference which you mention in your resume must be current and specific references. Your prospective employer wants to know about you from your reference and such references should be available to be contacted. Do not use references who cannot be contacted as this might give you a negative point.
The references which you choose should be the right people who will say good things about you. In addition to this the reference selected by you should be able to talk about your professional abilities. This will be an additional qualification when your reference is able to spell out your professional abilities. But you have to bear in mind that you need to keep a separate list of references instead of including them in your resume.
Also list your references based on category. Most of your references will have to be
Work-related. But you can also include a personal and an educational reference. Clearly mark the category of your references so that your hiring employer is able to know what type of reference he/she is contacting. Also make sure that your references have a copy of your resume so that they will know what and how to talk about you.
