How to write a Resume

When you send in your resume to a prospective employer as a job seeker you should know that your resume will be competing against hundreds of other resumes all applying for the same job. Hence you have to figure out a way to make your resume stand out amongst a sea of others.

Generally each resume is scanned for a couple of seconds and then side lined for the next. All except the ones that manage to intrigue the reader with the first few lines that drives him to give the whole thing a thorough reading. You must then write a good resume that captivates the employer.

One of the most effective ways to catch the attention of the employer is to emphasis on your achievements. This involves listing out the job responsibilities that you had in the past as well as the ones that you currently have. This is an important part off the resume but not the only area that needs to be paid attention.

Generally speaking the higher the position which you apply for the more accomplishments you should have under your belt. You need to mention how you managed to discharge your responsibilities and exceed the expectations of your employers by showing proof of your performance. This will make the employer assume that you are likely to do so in the future as an employee for him.

A resume requires you to state exactly what position you worked at on your previous job. Although making mention of the position will give the recruiter an idea of what your previous job was like it does not tell him anything about your performance in the job or your abilities. You must therefore make separate mention of your abilities and how you put them to use in the previous job and how you intend to put them to use in the future job.

Make use of powerful keywords when describing your achievements in order to attract the attention of the employer. Action verbs and industry words where appropriate should be made full use of. Basically you need to convince him of your competency hence now is not the time or place to be overly modest.

The format of a resume is an extremely important feature. You must make sure not to clamp all the information together such as your responsibilities and achievements. Make proper headings using highlights. Use sub headings but don’t go over on the use of bullets.

Remember you have your work history section, responsibilities and achievements section, qualification, education and personal information sections that come together to form a resume. You need to make sure that all these things are nicely composed so as to make your resume physically stand out along with its content.

Great content coupled with great presentation is the key to a successful resume. The writing of a resume is not something that should be taken lightly. Rather one should pay it its due diligence because it can either help you achieve what you want or make you lose the opportunity.
